Reading Difficulties for Boys

The Oxford University Press, Project X, reports that in England, boys' reading and writing test scores lag significantly behind girls' from the Early Years Foundation Stage profile right up to Key Stage 2 SATs.

Gender difference in reading achievement:
    •    England - boys are 19% behind girls
    •    Scotland - boys are 22% behind girls

Why these statistics are important
Research consistently shows that boys find learning to read more difficult than girls regardless of their intelligence. This important information will help educators target boys for appropriate help early on in order to boost their reading development.
